Western North Carolina Conference Lay Organization

Minutes from August 4, 2007 @ St. Joseph A.M.E. Church, Durham, NC @ 10am

Meeting was called to order @ 10 am by President Dwight Patterson, 1817 Russell Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28216.

I. Devotion:

Devotion led by Bro. Wilbert Hooker, Chaplin, 6524 Lincolnville Road, Raleigh, 27606.

Devotional service opened with the Laymen’s Song (#582); Prayer and Scripture Reading First Corinthians 13: 1-6. Bro. Hooker spoke regarding ‘Unconditional Love’ – Showing Charity and Love and meaning it towards your fellow Brothers and Sisters.

II. Greetings:

Sis. Phyllis Shumate, St. Josephs A.M.E. Church, gave greetings and welcome.

Rev. Phillip Cousin, Host Pastor, greeted the membership and expounded on his platform for Bishop,

2nd Episcopal District: Economic Self-Help Programs.

Sis. Karla Brooks, Recording Secretary, POB 1915, Liberty, NC 27298, conducted roll call of Executive Board Members and Ex-Officio Officers present and roster was circulated of conference lay members and meeting dues paid.

Bro. Kenneth Woods - 2nd Vice President (Excused); Sis. Mary Locklear - 3rd Vice President (Excused); Sis. Agnes Foushee - Assistant Recording Secretary; Bro. Richard Hunter - Corresponding Secretary (Excused); Bro. George Johnson - Director-Public Relations; Sis. Lenora Woods - Central District Coordinator; Sis. Gertrude Upperman; Bro. Ward Miller and Bro. James Johnson - Ex-Officio Officers were absent.

VI. Minutes and Minutes Approval: Minute reading of last meeting was waived by President

VII. Correspondence: Bro. Richard Hunter, 4420 Sun Valley Drive, Durham, NC 27707, was excused and Correspondence reading waived by President.

VIII. Director of Lay Activities:

Sis. Florence Avery, Director – Lay Activities, 2507 Trout Stream Drive, Raleigh, NC 27604.

¤ Presentation of new workbook materials

o The Journal of Christian Education (Available to the church through the Pastor for Lay Organization usage.)

o We Speak (Lay Magazine) 

¤ Had General Conference information available for delegates.

¤ Lay Organization workbooks for sale - $30

¤ September 8th, Lay Institute – Mt. Zion, Greensboro

o Lay Organization

o Responsibility/Duties of Lay Members

o Budget: Local Organization, Conference and Local Church

¤ Plan additional Institutes in the Western District

IX. Business Reports: 

A. Membership Sis. Janie Wilson, 2711 Pheiffer Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603, Financial Secretary reported current membership of 1,355 (Adult = 1,240 / Youth 115).

B. Treasurer Bro. William James, Treasurer, 3506 Meadowrun Drive, Durham, NC 27707, submitted financial report:

Beginning Balance: $14,395.57; Raised: $4,676; Expenditures: ($9,261.41);

Ending Balance: 9,810.16

Pres. Dwight Patterson verified Reconciliation statement. It was approved by motion (Bro. Winchester) and seconded by the body that the financial report be received and filed for information.


C. Coordinators

Western District: Sis. Jacqueline Kanipe, 207 Branch Street, Morganton, NC 27655

¤ Bethel , Pleasant Garden and Corpening Chapel, Morganton organized Lay Organization.

¤ Spoke at Adams Metropolitan at 11am service in August 12, 2007

Central District: Sis. Lenora Woods, 5279 Windy Hill Drive, Raleigh, NC 27604.

Eastern District: Sis. Emma Devine, 2703 Hinson Drive, Durham, NC 27704 .

¤ Sis. Emma Devine – Kentè scarves available for $20

¤ Coordinators presented a list of church in each district with Lay Organizations and will contact those without.

D. Jack and Jill Extravaganza

Sis. Bettie Duell, Director-Youth Activities, 403 Plaza Drive, Garner, NC 27529.

¤ Talked with Dr. Celestine Cheeks, SED President concerning Focus Groups in the WNCC to strengthen items in Discipline or change items.

¤ Complimented Lay Night Committee

¤ Contact Scholarship Committee Chairperson in regards to appointment and fax machine for Corresponding Secretary, Richard Hunter.

¤ Fundraiser suggestions to increase financial means for WNCC:

o Bro. Winchester Wellness and Wealth Seminars.

o Bro. Hooker in regards to the Jack and Jill: Divide the three conferences to start now collecting money.

¤ The Host Lay President or Designee of the Host Church for the Conference will be the Chair of Lay Night. This motion (Sis. Emma Devine) was seconded (Bro. Wilbert Hooker) and approved by membership

¤ Nominating and Credential Committee

X. Scholarships:

Sis. Maxine Jones, 1600 Argonne Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27107 was absent.

XI. Historiographer: Bro. Leonard Flake, 510-A Webster St., Cary, NC 27511.

XII. Old Business:

¤ Website for WNCC (www.wncclay.org), Sis. Bobbi Hague

¤ Disposable camera will be used for events and transfer pictures to CD for website downloads.

¤ Website to contain Ads, Events, individual Lay Organizations Updates and Pictures of Annual Conference.

o Local Lay Organizations will not be charged for website with the exception of domain name.

o Fee for ads based on tenure on website.

¤ Committee of ads for website: Bro. Dwight Patterson, James Hill, L. C. Corpening and Bobbi Hague

o Set criteria for ads

XIII. New Business:

¤ Bro. James Hill stated the committee ‘Reuniting of the Conference’ endeavor will be taken up at the 2008 Annual Conference.
